A first purchase does not need to be the most expensive tin. The useful question is what you will make with it. A powder intended for a plain whisked bowl may be different from one you enjoy in a milk drink or dessert.
A five-point checklist
- Choose your use. Plain bowl, latte and cooking give you different flavour priorities. Start with the use guide.
- Read the origin details. Look for a clearly identified producer or growing region where available, rather than vague claims about tradition.
- Check freshness information. A packing or best-before date, sensible packaging and clear storage advice help you judge the product.
- Start with a manageable size. A smaller tin is easier to finish while you learn, even if the price per gram is higher.
- Compare the price per serving. Divide the price by the number of 2 g servings to see the real cost of your usual cup.
Colour and grade labels can be clues, but neither substitutes for clear product information and your own taste. The term “ceremonial grade” deserves particular care: it is often used in marketing without a common standard that lets you compare every seller.
