Storage / Matcha Matsu guide

How to store matcha after opening

Keep the tin closed, protected and sized for how quickly you drink it.

Small unbranded tin of matcha powder

Matcha’s fine powder is exposed to air each time you open its container. A simple storage routine helps preserve its flavour and makes a small purchase easier to enjoy fully.

A practical routine

Close the package firmly after each use. Keep it away from direct light, heat, moisture and strong kitchen odours. Use a dry spoon or scoop. Follow the producer’s instructions where they are specific to the packaging you bought.

If you refrigerate matcha, keep the container tightly sealed and avoid opening it while the powder is colder than the room: condensation can introduce moisture. For everyday use, a cool, dark cupboard may be simpler if the product’s instructions allow it. Do not repeatedly move an open tin between warm and cold places.

Buy a size you can finish

A large bag can appear cheaper per gram but may be poor value if you rarely make matcha. A smaller tin that you finish while it tastes good can be the better first purchase. Check the seller’s date and storage guidance before buying.

If your drink has become dull, compare it with a newly opened powder if you have one. Then check the troubleshooting guide before blaming only your technique. This page is about quality and flavour, not a promise about a precise number of days that every powder will remain fresh.
